Chapter 1

Elkanah has two wives and worships yearly at Shiloh (1:1-3)
He cherishes Hannah, though she is barren and ridiculed by Peninnah (1:4-8)
Hannah in grief prays for a child (1:9-11)
Eli, first rebuking her, afterwards blesses her (1:12-18)
Hannah having given birth to Samuel, stays at home till he is weaned (1:19-23)
She presents him, in accordance with her vow, to the Lord (1:24-28)


Chapter 2

Hannah's song of thankfulness (2:1-11)
The sin of Eli's sons (2:12-17)
Samuel's ministry (2:18-19)
By Eli's blessing, Hannah is more fruitful (2:20-21)
Eli reproves his sons (2:22-26)
A prophecy against Eli's house (2:27-36)


Chapter 3

How the word of the Lord was first revealed to Samuel (3:1-9)
Samuel warns Eli (3:10-14)
Samuel reluctantly tells Eli the vision (3:15-18)
Samuel grows in favor (3:19-21)


Chapter 4

The Israelites are overcome by the Philistines at Eben-ezer (4:1-2)
They fetch the ark, and terrify the Philistines (4:3-9)
They are smitten again, the ark taken, Hophni and Phinehas slain (4:10-11)
Eli falling backward at the news, breaks his neck (4:12-18)
Phinehas' wife, weakened by the news, dies giving birth to I-chabod (4:19-22)


Chapter 5

The Philistines, having brought the ark into Ashdod, set it in the house of Dagon (5:1-2)
Dagon is struck down and cut in pieces, and the men of Ashdod are smitten with tumors (5:3-7)
God similarly smites the men of Gath, when the ark is brought there (5:8-9)
And also the men of Ekron, when it is brought to their city (5:10-12)


Chapter 6

After seven months the Philistines take counsel how to send back the ark (6:1-9)
They bring it on a new cart with an offering unto Beth-shemesh (6:10-18)
The people are smitten for looking into the ark (6:19-20)
They send to the people of Kirjath-jearim to fetch it (6:21)


Chapter 7

The people of Kirjath-jearim bring the ark into the house of Abinadab (7:1)
After twenty years (7:2)
Through Samuel's exhortation, the Israelites solemnly repent at Mizpeh (7:3-6)
While Samuel prays and sacrifices, the Lord discomfits the Philistines, at Eben-ezer (7:7-12)
The Philistines are subdued (7:13-14)
Samuel peaceably and religiously judges Israel (7:15-17)


Chapter 8

Because of the bad government of Samuel's sons, the Israelites ask for a king (8:1-5)
Samuel, praying in grief, is comforted by God (8:6-9)
He describes the manner of a king (8:10-18)
God tells Samuel to yield unto the request of the people (8:19-22)


Chapter 9

Saul, despairing to find his father's asses (9:1-5)
By the counsel of his servant (9:6-10)
And direction of young maidens (9:11-14)
According to God's revelation (9:15-17)
Saul comes to Samuel (9:18)
Samuel entertains Saul at the feast (9:19-24)
Samuel, after secret communication, brings Saul on his way (9:25-27)


Chapter 10

Samuel anoints Saul (10:1)
He confirms him by prediction of three signs (10:2-8)
Saul's heart is changed, and he prophesies (10:9-16)
Saul is chosen at Mizpeh by lot (10:17-25)
The different affections of his subjects (10:26-27)


Chapter 11

Nahash offers the men of Jabesh-gilead a shameful condition for peace (11:1-3)
They send messengers and are delivered by Saul (11:4-11)
Saul is confirmed in his kingdom (11:12-15)


Chapter 12

Samuel testifies to his integrity (12:1-5)
He reproves the people for their ingratitude (12:6-15)
God terrifies them with thunder in harvest time (12:16-18)
Samuel comforts them in God's mercy (12:19-25)


Chapter 13

Saul's select band of three thousand warriors (13:1-2)
He calls the Hebrews to Gilgal against the Philistines, whose garrison Jonathan had defeated (13:3-4)
The Philistines' great host (13:5)
The distress of the Israelites (13:6-7)
Saul, weary of waiting for Samuel, offers sacrifice (13:8-10)
Samuel reproves him (13:11-16)
The three looting bands of the Philistines (13:17-18)
The policy of the Philistines, to permit no smith in Israel (13:19-23)


Chapter 14

Jonathan, unknown to his father, the priest, or the people, defeats the Philistines' garrison (14:1-14)
There is panic in the camp and among the people (14:15-16)
Saul, not waiting for the priest's answer, engages the Philistines (14:17-20)
The captive Hebrews and the hidden Israelites join against them (14:21-23)
Saul's unadvised command hinders the victory (14:24-31)
Saul restrains the people from eating blood (14:32-34)
Saul builds an altar (14:35)
Jonathan, taken by lot, is saved by the people (14:36-46)
Saul's strength and family (14:47-52)


Chapter 15

Samuel sends Saul to destroy Amalek (15:1-7)
He spares Agag and the best of the spoil (15:8-9)
God rejects Saul for his disobedience (15:10-23)
Saul's humiliation and confession (15:24-31)
Samuel kills Agag (15:32-33)
Samuel and Saul part (15:34-35)


Chapter 16

Samuel is sent by God to Beth-lehem (16:1-5)
His human judgment is reproved (16:6-10)
He anoints David (16:11-13)
Saul sends for David to quiet his evil spirit (16:14-23)


Chapter 17

The armies of the Israelites and Philistines being ready to battle (17:1-3)
Goliath comes proudly forth, challenging any Israelite to personal combat (17:4-11)
David takes the challenge (17:12-27)
Eliab chides him (17:28-29)
He is brought to Saul to whom he shows the reason of his confidence (17:30-37)
Armed by faith, he slays the giant (17:38-54)
Saul takes notice of David (17:55-58)


Chapter 18

Jonathan loves David and they make a covenant (18:1-4)
Saul envies his praise (18:5-9)
Seeks to kill him in his fury (18:10-11)
Saul fears him for his good success (18:12-16)
Saul offers him his daughter (18:17-21)
David become the king's son-in-law and brings Michal's dowry (18:22-27)
Saul's hatred and David's glory increase (18:28-30)


Chapter 19

Saul plans to kill David but is reconciled by Jonathan (19:1-7)
Reason of David's good success in a new war, Saul's malicious rage breaks out against him (19:8-11)
Michal deceives her father with an image in David's bed. (19:12-17)
David comes to Samuel in Naioth (19:18-19)
Saul's messengers, sent to take David (19:20-21)
And Saul himself, prophesy (19:22-24)


Chapter 20

David consults with Jonathan for his safety (20:1-10)
Jonathan and David renew their covenant by oath (20:11-17)
Jonathan's token to David (20:18-23)
Saul, missing David, seeks to kill Jonathan (20:24-34)
Jonathan lovingly takes his leave of David (20:35-42)


Chapter 21

David at Nob requisitions the hallowed bread (21:1-6)
Doeg is present (21:7)
David takes Goliath's sword (21:8-9)
David at Gath pretends to be mad (21:10-15)


Chapter 22

Companies resort unto David at Adullam (22:1-2)
At Mizpeh he commends his parents unto the king of Moab (22:3-4)
Admonished by Gad, he comes to Hareth (22:5)
Saul, pursuing him, complains of his servant's unfaithfulness (22:6-8)
Doeg accuses Ahimelech (22:9-10)
Doeg executes Saul's command to kill the priests (22:11-19)
Abiathar, escaping, brings David the news (22:20-23)


Chapter 23

David, at the word of the Lord, rescues Keilah (23:1-6)
God reveals to him the coming of Saul and the treachery of the Keilites, David escapes (23:7-13)
In Ziph Jonathan comes and comforts him (23:14-18)
The Ziphites betray him to Saul (23:19-24)
At Maon he is rescued from Saul by the invasion of the Philistines. (23:25-28)
He dwells at En-gedi (23:29)


Chapter 24

David in a cave at En-gedi, having cut off Saul's skirt, spares his life (24:1-7)
Thereby proving his innocence (24:8-15)
Saul, acknowledging his fault, takes an oath of David, and departs (24:16-22)


Chapter 25

Samuel dies (25:1)
David in Paran sends to Nabal (25:2-9)
Provoked by Nabal's churlishness, he plans to destroy him (25:10-13)
Abigail, understanding this, takes a present (25:14-22)
And, by her wisdom (25:23-31)
She pacifies David (25:32-35)
Nabal, hearing of this, dies (25:36-38)
David takes Abigail and Ahinoam as his wives (25:39-43)
Michal is given to Phalti (25:44)


Chapter 26

Saul comes to Hachilah against David (26:1-4)
David comes to the encampment and restrains Abishai from killing Saul (26:5-12)
David reproves Abner and pleads with Saul (26:13-20)
Saul acknowledges his sin (26:21-25)


Chapter 27

Saul, hearing that David is in Gath, seeks no more for him (27:1-4)
David begs Achish for the town of Ziklag (27:5-7)
Invading other countries, David persuades Achish that he fought against Judah (27:8-12)


Chapter 28

Achish puts confidence in David (28:1-2)
Saul having destroyed the witches (28:3-4)
And now in his fear forsaken of God (28:5-6)
Saul seeks a witch (28:7-8)
The witch, encouraged by Saul, raises up Samuel (28:9-14)
Saul, hearing his ruin foretold, faints (28:15-20)
The woman and his servants refresh him (28:21-25)


Chapter 29

David marches with the Philistine, but is rejected by their princes (29:1-5)
Achish dismisses him, with commendations (29:6-11)


Chapter 30

The Amalekites spoil Ziklag (30:1-6)
David, asking counsel, is encouraged by God to pursue them (30:7-10)
Means of a revived Egyptian, he is brought to the enemies, and recovers all the spoil (30:11-21)
David's law to divide the spoil between those who fight and those who keep the supplies (30:22-25)
He sends presents to his friends (30:26-31)


Chapter 31

Saul having lost his army, and his sons slain, he and his armorbearer kill themselves (31:1-6)
The Philistines possess the towns abandoned by the Israelites (31:7)
They triumph over the dead bodies (31:8-10)
The people of Jabesh-gilead, recovering the bodies, burn them at Jabesh, and bury their bones (31:11-13)

Chapter 1

News of Saul's overthrow is brought to David (1:1-6)
The messenger accuses himself of Saul's death (1:7-14)
And is slain by the command of David (1:15-16)
David laments Saul and Jonathan with a song (1:17-27)


Chapter 2

At God's direction, David and his company go up to Hebron, where he is made king of Judah (2:1-4)
He commends the people of Jabesh-gilead for their kindness to Saul (2:5-7)
Abner makes Ish-bosheth king of Israel (2:8-11)
A mortal skirmish between twelve of Abner's and twelve of Joab's men (2:12-17)
Asahel is slain (2:18-24)
At Abner's motion Joab sounds a retreat (2:25-31)
Asahel's burial (2:32)


Chapter 3

During the war David still waxes stronger (3:1)
Six sons are born to him in Hebron (3:2-5)
Abner, displeased with Ish-bosheth (3:6-11)
Transfers his allegiance to David (3:12)
David requires as a condition of the alliance that his wife Michal be brought to him (3:13-16)
Abner, having communed with the Israelites, is feasted by David and dismissed (3:17-21)
Joab, returning from battle, is displeased with the king, and kills Abner (3:22-27)
David curses Joab (3:28-30)
And mourns for Abner (3:31-39)


Chapter 4

The Israelites being troubled at the death of Abner (4:1)
Baanah and Rechab slay Ish-bosheth, and bring his head to Hebron (4:2-8)
David commands their death and the burial of Ish-bosheth's head (4:9-12)


Chapter 5

The tribes come to Hebron to anoint David king over Israel (5:1-3)
David's age (5:4-5)
Taking Zion from the Jebusites, he dwells there (5:6-10)
Hiram sends to David (5:11-12)
Eleven sons are born to him in Jerusalem (5:13-16)
David, directed by God, smites the Philistines at Baal-perazim (5:17-21)
And again at the mulberry trees (5:22-25)


Chapter 6

David transports the ark incorrectly from Kirjath-jearim on a new cart (6:1-5)
Uzzah is smitten a Perez-uzzah (6:6-8)
God blesses Obed-edom for the ark (6:9-11)
David, transports the ark correctly into Zion with sacrifices, dances before it, which Michal despises him (6:12-16)
He places it in a tabernacle with great joy and feasting (6:17-19)
Michal, reproving David for his religious joy, is childless to her death (6:20-23)


Chapter 7

Nathan, first approving the purpose of David to build God a house, later, by the word of God, forbids him (7:1-3)
God's covenant with David (7:4-11)
He promises David blessings in his seed (7:12-17)
David's prayer and thanksgiving (7:18-29)


Chapter 8

David subdues the Philistines and the Moabites (8:1-2)
David smites Hadadezer and the Syrians (8:3-8)
Toi sends Joram with presents to bless him (8:9-13)
David puts garrisons in Edom (8:14-15)
David's officers (8:16-18)


Chapter 9

David, by Ziba, sends for Mephibosheth (9:1-6)
For Jonathan's sake he entertains him at his table and restores him all that was Saul's (9:7-8)
He makes Ziba his farmer (9:9-13)


Chapter 10

David's messengers, sent to comfort Hanun the son of Nahash, are shamefully treated (10:1-5)
The Ammonites are overcome by Joab and Abishai (10:6-14)
Shobach, rallying the Syrians at Helam, is slain by David (10:15-19)


Chapter 11

While Joab besieges Rabbah, David commits adultery with Bath-sheba (11:1-5)
Uriah, sent for by David to cover the adultery, will not go home either sober or drunk (11:6-13)
He brings to Joab a letter which assures his death (11:14-17)
Joab sends the news thereof to David (11:18-25)
David takes Bath-sheba as his wife (11:26-27)


Chapter 12

Nathan's parable of the ewe lamb causes David to be his own judge (12:1-6)
David, reproved by Nathan, confesses his sin (12:7-14)
David mourns and prays for the child (12:15-23)
Solomon is born and named Jedidiah (12:24-25)
David takes Rabbah and sets its people to labor (12:26-31)


Chapter 13

Ammon defiles Tamar (13:1-14)
He hates her and shamefully turns her away (13:15-18)
Absalom comforts her and conceals his purpose to avenge her (13:19-22)
At a sheepshearing, among all the king's sons, he kills Ammon (13:23-29)
David, grieving at the news, is comforted by Jonadab (13:30-36)
Absalom flees to Talmai at Geshur (13:37-39)


Chapter 14

David is induced to permit Absalom's return (14:1-22)
Absalom is brought back to Jerusalem (14:23-24)
Absalom's beauty, hair, and children (14:25-27)
After two years, Absalom is brought by Joab into the king's presence (14:28-33)


Chapter 15

Absalom wins the affection of Israel (15:1-6)
He obtains leave to go to Hebron, where he instigates a conspiracy (15:7-12)
David flees from Jerusalem (15:13-18)
Ittai the Gittite will not leave him (15:19-23)
Zadok and Abiathar are sent back with the ark (15:24-29)
David and his company go up Mount Olivet weeping (15:30)
He curses Ahithophel's counsel (15:31)
Hushai is sent back with instructions (15:32-37)


Chapter 16

Ziba, by presents and false suggestions, obtains his master's inheritance (16:1-4)
At Bahurim, Shimei curses David (16:5-8)
David with patience abstains, and restrains others, from revenge (16:9-14)
Hushai insinuates himself into Absalom's counsel (16:15-19)
Ahithophel's counsel (16:20-23)


Chapter 17

Ahithophel's counsel is overthrown by Hushai's, according to God's plan (17:1-14)
Secret intelligence is sent unto David (17:15-22)
Ahithophel hangs himself (17:23-24)
Amasa is made captain (17:25-26)
David is furnished with provisions (17:27-29)


Chapter 18

David, viewing his armies in their march, charges them to deal kindly with Absalom (18:1-5)
David's enemies are defeated in the wood of Ephraim (18:6-8)
Absalom, hanging in an oak, is slain by Joab (18:9-17)
Absalom's monument (18:18)
Ahimaaz and the Cushite bring tidings to David (18:19-33)


Chapter 19

Joab causes the king to cease his mourning (19:1-8)
The Israelites desire to bring the king back (19:9-10)
David sends to the priests to stir up the people of Judah (19:11-17)
Shimei is pardoned (19:18-23)
Mephibosheth excused (19:24-31)
Barzillai is retired and Chimham, his son, is taken into the king's family (19:32-40)
The Israelites expostulate with Judah for bringing home the king without them (19:41-43)


Chapter 20

Because of the quarrel, Sheba makes a division in Israel (20:1-2)
David's ten concubines are shut up in perpetual prison (20:3)
Amasa, made captain over Judah, is slain by Joab (20:4-13)
Joab pursues Sheba the son of Bichri unto Abel (20:14-15)

Chapter 21

Three years of famine cease when seven of Saul's descendants are hanged (21:1-9)

David buries the bones of Saul and Jonathan (21:12-14)
Four battles against the Philistines, wherein four valiants of David slay four giants (21:15-22)

A psalm of thanksgiving (22:1-51)

David professes his faith in God's promises to be beyond sense or experience (23:1-5)

A catalogue of David's mighty men (23:8-39)


Chapter 24

David forces Joab to number the people (24:1-4)
The captains complete the numbering in nine months and twenty days (24:5-9)
David, having three plagues proposed by Gad, chooses the three days' pestilence (24:10-14)
After the death of seventy thousand, David repents (24:15-17)
David purchases Araunah's threshing floor, where the plague is stayed (24:18-25)
